According to court documents reported by Reuters, Spain’s judicial system ruled that the government must return more than €60 million paid by the artist in fines and interest related to tax accusations dating back several years.
The conflict began in 2018, when Spanish prosecutors accused Shakira of failing to pay taxes during the years she lived in the country. Authorities claimed she should have been considered an official tax resident in Spain.
Shakira consistently denied wrongdoing and argued that she did not spend enough time in Spain during the period in question to qualify as a tax resident under Spanish law.

The court concluded that Spanish authorities failed to prove that the singer spent more than 183 days in Spain during 2011, which is the legal threshold required for tax residency status.
Because of that, the ruling sided with Shakira and ordered the repayment of the financial penalties she had already paid, including accumulated interest.
Her lawyer, Jose Luis Prada, described the outcome as the end of an exhausting and unfair process that had lasted nearly eight years.
2023, Shakira reached a settlement connected to parts of the case, while later stating publicly that she believed she had paid far more than necessary.
Despite the latest ruling, the case may not be completely over. Reports indicate that the decision can still be appealed to Spain’s Supreme Court.
The legal victory comes shortly after Shakira performed a huge concert at Copacabana Beach, where reports estimated that around two million people attended the event.
The singer remains one of the world’s biggest Latin pop stars, continuing to attract massive international audiences both on stage and in the media.
